By Anne Province, Nasco Drive

Here¹s a follow-up to the earlier discussion:

With the advice from this listserve (see below) I called Don Gardner,
consulting arborist, $125/visit. He doesn¹t provide any other services,
just diagnoses and recommends treatments. He came today and did an
extensive analysis of huge live oak tree in my front yard, 6400 Nasco.

He said this tree is stressed because of the very dry weather we¹ve had in
the last 9 months; and because it has gotten so big that its root system is
constrained by house, street, etc. He called the thin canopy ³tip die-off²
and said that the tree could recover in 1-2 years if treated, but that it
was a symptom that shouldn¹t be ignored.

His recommended treatments include deep watering everywhere in my yard under
the tree¹s canopy, organic compost spread over my yard and gardens and
watered in, and some feeding of the tree itself with an organic seaweed
blend. Absolutely no herbicides on the turf. He also recommended I pull
any plantings/dirt 10-12 inches away from the tree¹s trunk . I have
planting beds near the tree with landscape fabric/weed barrier‹I¹m going to
pull that off because it keeps the tree¹s roots from getting air. He was
happy I use Scott George of Austin Beautiful Trees whenever I need the
canopy lifted off the street or house, and that I do minimal tree-trimming,
and no stripping of trunk or branches.

I didn¹t ask him about the other arborist¹s recommended deep fertilization
and fungicide because I¹d already learned from Google what Mr. Gardner felt
about those treatments.

Most of this was specific to this tree and to my landscaping, and I
recommend Mr. Gardner to all those who side-posted me with tree concerns.
Great fun to be around someone that passionate and knowledgeable about
Austin¹s trees!

Anne Province
Nasco Drive
It's my Park! day was a huge sucess! There were more volunteers than ever, and significant improvements were made in every location that will have a lasting impact.

But, of course, there is always someone who just doesn't get it... and I need to get this out there:

- When you are using a bike lane, and volunteers are removing debris from the lane so that you can safely use the facility. Complaining to them is not cool. These folks could be doing their own Saturday morning recreation, but instead ... gave of their time, tools and energy to make the area clean and safe for your use.

So, if you don't have 2 hours out of your year to help maintain a space you use regularly. Don't ruin their day by yelling at them.

Grinch!

- Don't walk your dog over and tell me your going to volunteer, let your dog poopie all over the spot we just cleaned and not pick it up. It was not only ridiculous, it's demeaning to the volunteers.

If you are going to give your time, you can give 1 minute per walk to picking up after your dog and tossing it in the trash. If you can't really volunteer, at least pick up after your dog... it is the law. Really, just promise me you will pick up after your dog for 60 days. 1 pick up per walk = 1 min, 2 walks per day. That would give us 2 months (60 days) of not having to deal with your mess.... See you in 60 days

Messy polluter!

- To the lady who stayed an extra 1.5 hours to paint, and complained about the lack of tools: Far more volunteers showed up than expected - if you want the organizer to have enough supplies, sign up

- Don't complain about how to promote an event, or who should or should not have been invited unless you are privy to the conditions that have led to the success of the event. There are constraints you do not see that the organizers have to deal with. (For example, there is a significant safety issue when people are working around a pond. To ensure everyone's safety, the city requested that we NOT promote the event more.)

- Again, don't complain endlessly to the organizer who has poured their heart into pulling everything together. It just makes them want avoid doing the event again. (Get off my back! you have lived her longer than I have... and there hasn't been a clean-up in NW Park for over 10 years. If you are so opinionated, plan your own clean up.. and guess what, i will support your efforts.. not be a jerk about it.)

- When you "stay extra time" -- You are being inconsiderate. You are not actually doing anyone a favor other than yourself. The organizer has to stay to supervise (The equipment was not yours, and the organizer was responsible for returning the paints to the city.) So you are actually imposing on other people - people had to cancel their Saturday plans because you argued and basically kept saying "oh it is irresponsible to leave this unfinished" (Add your miserable belly-aching... sheesh you were really determined to make it as unpleasant as possible.)

Well, guess what... the paint will not spoil. We can come back later to finish the job. Or, better yet, come back on your own to paint - when the organizer is not obligated to return the tools and paint to their owners.

Scrooge!
